Lake Isabella is a small community of about 3,570 people at the 2020 census, sitting in Hot Springs Valley, part of the Kern River Valley, at roughly 2,500 feet elevation in the southern Sierra Nevada. It is about 41.5 miles northeast of our Bakersfield base via State Route 178, roughly a 58-minute drive, and it anchors a cluster of Kern River Valley communities, including Kernville about 11 miles farther up the lake, that together form one of the more significant RV and camping destinations in Kern County. Built around a reservoir and a river

Isabella Lake did not always sit where it does. The original town of Isabella, founded in 1893 and named for Queen Isabella of Spain, moved about 1.5 miles south around 1953 when the Army Corps of Engineers completed Isabella Dam, an earthen dam impounding the North and South forks of the Kern River into an 11,000-acre reservoir that serves as Bakersfield’s primary water source. The dam went through a major structural retrofit after concerns identified in 2006; the Army Corps substantially completed that work by 2022, and in February 2023 officials requested permission to let the lake reach full capacity for the first time in about fifteen years.

Tourism is genuinely central to this area’s economy, more so than anywhere else on our service map. Boating, fishing, hiking, and whitewater rafting on the Upper and Lower Kern River, much of it within Sequoia National Forest, draw visitors throughout the warmer months, and RV camping is a major part of how people experience it.

Two examples of the full-hookup campgrounds in Kernville, on the Kern River: Rivernook Campground, a 40-acre riverfront property at 14001 Sierra Way with 30 and 50-amp full-hookup RV sites; and Camp Kernville, a ten-acre campground and RV resort at 24 Sirretta Street with about 1,000 feet of private Kern River shoreline. What we see most in the Kern River Valley

Generator calls at campsites without shore power. Many Kern River Valley campsites, especially the more rustic Forest Service and lake-adjacent sites, have no hookups, which makes a working generator essential rather than a convenience.

Battery and 12V issues on rigs used for weekend camping trips. A rig that spends most of its life in Bakersfield storage and comes out for river and lake trips is subject to the same heat-driven battery wear as anywhere else in the county; see the batteries dead page, plus the extra draw of 12V lighting, water pumps, and fans at a site with no shore power.

Slide-out and leveling issues on uneven ground. Campsites and older driveways in the valley are not always as level as a paved Bakersfield lot, and getting a rig properly leveled matters for both slide-out operation and absorption refrigerators.

Access and road awareness. Some routes into the Kern River Valley involve mountain grades; tell us your rig’s length and the road you plan to use if you are unsure, the same way you would check before heading into Tehachapi Mountain Park.
