Why batteries fail here more than owners expect

This is the single most common appliance-adjacent call we take in Kern County. Lead-acid batteries self-discharge faster in heat, and a battery bank sitting on a rig parked in a driveway or storage lot through a Bakersfield summer, particularly through a stretch of sustained 100-plus-degree days, loses charge and sulfates faster than the same bank would in a mild climate. A rig pulled out of storage for a trip and found completely dead is one of the most predictable failures we see, and it is largely preventable with a trickle charger or solar maintainer running through the hot months.

Water heaters: usually cheaper than owners fear

A water heater that will not light is one of the most common “big scary problem” calls that turns out to be small. The most frequent causes are a wasp or insect nest in the burner tube (a real issue in Central Valley ag country, where insects are everywhere), a corroded or failed thermocouple, or a dirty igniter. All three are $150 to $450 repairs. Full replacement, $700 to $1,800 depending on tank versus tankless, is reserved for a genuinely failed tank or a unit old enough that repair does not make sense.

Repair or replace

Replace when:

• A refrigerator’s cooling unit has failed (a yellowing tint or ammonia smell is the telltale sign); the sealed system cannot be economically repaired.
• A water heater tank itself is corroded or leaking, not just a component feeding it.
• Batteries will not hold a meaningful charge after a full, proper charge cycle.

Repair when:

• It is a thermocouple, igniter, burner tube, sail switch, blower motor, or control board, which covers the large majority of calls.
• The appliance is reasonably young and otherwise sound.

Preventing the call

Run a battery maintainer through the hot months if the rig sits unused. This alone prevents a large share of the dead-battery calls we take.

Check the water heater burner tube for nests before the first lighting attempt of the season, especially after months of storage.

Keep the rig level when parked, particularly for absorption refrigerators, which need to be close to level to circulate their cooling fluid properly.
