RV Body and Fiberglass Repair in Bakersfield

Body and fiberglass damage on an RV usually comes from one of two sources in Kern County: storage-lot and driveway scrapes, or UV and heat working on gelcoat and seams over years. Most repairs run $250 to $1,200, with larger delamination or panel work quoted after an on-site look, since the real extent of the damage is often invisible until we get into it.

What we repair on site

  • Gelcoat cracks and crazing, including the fine surface cracking that shows up on sun-exposed panels after years of heat.
  • Compartment doors: hinges, latches, and cracked or warped panels, often from repeated heat cycling.
  • Trim and seal work around windows, doors, and body seams.
  • Sidewall scrapes and gouges from tight storage lots, low branches, or a misjudged driveway turn.
  • Delamination injection repair for early-stage separation between the skin and substrate.
  • Straight talk on when it needs a body shop. Major structural damage or a full panel replacement is genuinely outside mobile-service scope, and we will say so rather than take a job we cannot do well on site.

Why gelcoat and seals age the way they do here

Bakersfield’s summers are long and the sun is intense and sustained, not occasional. Gelcoat is essentially a hard, pigmented resin layer, and like any polymer exposed to UV and heat for years, it dries out and loses flexibility over time. That shows up first as fine surface crazing, cosmetic on its own, and eventually as deeper cracks, especially at stress points like corners and mounting brackets, where flexing meets embrittled material.

Seals and trim around windows and body seams face the same aging process, and a seal that has hardened and cracked is how water eventually gets behind the skin and starts delamination, even in a climate that gets relatively little rain. The valley’s occasional winter rain and the damp stretches that come with tule fog season are enough to exploit a seal that summer heat already compromised.

What moves the price

Extent of the damage. A single crack or a small scrape is straightforward. Delamination that has spread across a panel, or damage near a structural seam, takes longer to repair properly and may need more than one visit.

Color matching. Gelcoat color work on an older, sun-faded rig is inherently imperfect, since the surrounding surface has aged too. We will set expectations honestly before starting rather than promise a perfect factory match.

Access. Damage low on a sidewall in an open driveway is easy to reach. Damage up high or in a tight storage row takes more setup.

Preventing the call

Cover or shade the rig when possible, especially for long-term storage. Direct sun exposure over months is the single biggest driver of gelcoat aging in this climate.

Check seals annually, particularly around roof-adjacent seams and window frames, and address cracking before the next rainy or foggy stretch rather than after.

Be mindful in tight storage lots and driveways. A large share of the scrape and gouge calls we take are simple clearance misjudgments, not equipment failure.

We work fiberglass and body calls on site across Bakersfield, Oildale, Rosedale, Shafter, Taft, Tehachapi, and the Kern River Valley.

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes gelcoat cracking here?

UV and heat, mainly. Gelcoat is a rigid outer layer over fiberglass, and sustained sun exposure through Bakersfield's long, hot summers dries and embrittles it over years, leading to fine surface cracks called crazing. Crazing on an unstressed panel is largely cosmetic; cracking near a stress point (a corner, a mounting bracket) is worth having checked.

What is delamination and how do I know if I have it?

Delamination is separation between the fiberglass skin and the substrate underneath, usually from water intrusion at a seam or fitting. Look for bubbles, soft spots, or a slight bulge in an otherwise flat sidewall. It is a structural issue, not cosmetic, and it is worth diagnosing before it spreads.

How much does fiberglass and body repair cost?

Most jobs, gelcoat cracks, compartment door repair, trim and seal work, run $250 to $900. Larger delamination repairs or full panel work are quoted after an on-site assessment, since the extent of the damage genuinely is not visible from the outside until we get into it.

Can you match the gelcoat color?

Close matching is possible for many common colors and we will tell you honestly how close a repair will look before starting. Perfect factory matching on an older, sun-faded rig is not always achievable, since the surrounding gelcoat itself has changed color over years of UV exposure.
