Taft was named for President William Howard Taft in 1909, after a fire destroyed much of the town when it was still known by its earlier name. Today it sits at an elevation just under 1,000 feet, surrounded by working oil fields including Midway-Sunset and Buena Vista. The West Kern Oil Museum, home to a historic 1917 wooden derrick that produced oil into the 1980s, is a marker of just how central petroleum has been to the town’s identity for over a century.
